Justice of the Peace courts have original jurisdiction in Class C misdemeanor criminal cases, which are offenses punishable by fine only.

A Justice of the Peace may issue search or arrest warrants and may serve as the coroner in counties where there is no provision for a medical examiner.

The Court also function as small claims courts and has jurisdiction of minor civil matters.

A person cannot talk to a Judge about a case pending before the Court without all sides being present. That is called an ex parte communication and is prohibited.

“A Judge shall not initiate, permit, or consider ex parte or other communications made to the Judge outside the presence of the parties…concerning the merits of a pending or impending judicial proceeding. A Judge shall require compliance with this subsection by court personnel subject to his or her direction and control… Code of Judicial Conduct, Canon 3, Section B.(8)
